Castel Sant’ Angelo & St. Peter’s Basilica

The tour starts with the visit St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest buildings in the world and the largest of the papal basilicas. Following guests will walk to Castel Sant’Angelo. The history of Castel Sant’Angelo is intrinsically linked to that of Rome. Born as the tomb of the emperor Hadrian, it was finished by Antoninus Pius in 139 AD and fulfilled its original function for hundreds of years. With time, the Castle changed its function until Alexander VI Borgia, Pope since 1492, commissioned the architect Antonio Giamberti da Sangallo to turn it into an authentic military stronghold. What was once a mausoleum and then a fortress was eventually turned further into a luxurious palace in which the pontiff organized parties and banquets.

Important Notes

  • Comfortable shoes are recommended. The tour involves a lot of walking and standing.
  • Take the minimum personal belongings as the Museum does not have storage and for security reasons, medium and large bags, shoppers, backpacks, big umbrellas and baggage cannot be brought into the museum.
  • Sleeveless and / or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted in St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • Activity will take place regardless of weather, please bring the appropriate attire.
  • Please make sure to arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes prior to tour departure, to finalize your registration for the tour.
  • Exact times to be communicated closer to date based on the availability of entrance tickets.
  • The tour will be reconfirmed only if we reach the minimum number of participants required. In case the tour is not confirmed, you will be contacted by email by August 13th.
